Rita Duffy

Rita Hodgson Duffy, 86, formerly of Gateway Apartments, Edwardsville, and a 38-year resident of Clarks Summit, died Wednesday at Riverstreet Manor in Wilkes-Barre, where she had been a patient since February.

Born Jan. 8, 1920, in Plymouth, she was a daughter of the late Ralph and Margaret (Fertal) Hodgson. Rita was a graduate of Plymouth High School and Wyoming Seminary Business School. She worked for the Department of Public Instruction in Harrisburg prior to marriage, and later for International Correspondence School in Scranton. Mrs. Duffy was a parishioner of Our Lady of Snows in Clarks Summit and Saint Ignatius in Kingston. She was a member of Clarks Summit Senior Citizens Organization and Saint Ignatius Altar and Rosary Society. Rita served as a Girl Scout Leader, Majority Inspector of Voting District Two in Clarks Summit and was a past-president of the Scranton Canoe Club Women’s Organization. She volunteered her time for the Christmas Holiday Bureau in Scranton and Our Lady of Snows Parish in Clarks Summit. She was an avid bridge player and golfer, having achieved a hole-in-one.

Her husband of 50 years, Edmund R. Duffy, died in 1991.

Surviving are sons Edmund and his wife Annette of Edwardsville; Richard and his wife Charlotte of Hanover Township; grandchildren Diane Brink, Tara Strausbaugh, Sean Duffy, Thomas Duffy, RyAnn Duffy; great-grandchildren Julie and Abby Mercadante, Morgan and Megan Brink; Brandon Kufro, Brendan and Caitlin Duffy; Noah and Aden Strausbaugh; brother Ralph Hodgson and his wife Margaret of Jenkins Township; nephew Ralph Hodgson; niece Margaret Mary Green.

Funeral will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. from M.J. McLaughlin Company, 142 S. Washington St., Wilkes-Barre, with a funeral Mass at 9:30 a.m. in Holy Family Church, Sugar Notch. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover Township.

Friends may call Friday 4 to 8 p.m.
