Carl J. Baran, 87, of Hummelstown, Pa., died Friday, Oct. 27, 2006, following a brief illness. He hailed from Glen Lyon, Luzerne County, Pa., and graduated in 1937, from Newport Township High School, Wanamie, Pa. He was a World War II veteran. He participated in the D-Day invasion at Normandy, France, and the infamous Battle of the Bugle. Upon discharge, Carl moved to Camp Hill, Pa., and joined the U.S. Postal Service.
Carl is survived by his wife of 59 years, the former Josephine Swiencki, and his daughter, Shari M. Zimmerman, wife of John R. Zimmerman of Hummelstown. He was predeceased by his mother, Pauline Dolinski Baran, and his sister, Helen Hassel, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
A memorial Mass was celebrated on Tuesday, Oct. 31, at the St. Joan of Arc Roman Catholic Church in Hershey, Pa. Entombment was held in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Mechanicsburg, Pa. Arrangements were handled by Hoover Funeral Home and Crematory Inc., Hershey, Pa.
