Arreta Phillips

Mrs. Arreta Phillips, 105, of Tunkhannock, went to be with the Lord Sunday evening at Tyler Memorial Hospital, Tunkhannock.

She was born in South Auburn, Susquehanna County, on Dec. 19, 1900. She was a daughter of the late Charles L. and Ida Estella Baldwin Depew. Her husband, Bruce C. Phillips, passed away on Jan. 31, 1971.

Arreta was a school teacher in Sullivan County during the time of the one-room schools and was a seamstress and did alteration at home in Tunkhannock for many years. She was a member of the Tunkhannock Baptist Church, Wyoming County Historical Society, Wyoming County Christian Temperance Society, Wyoming County Senior Citizens and worked on the Tunkhannock Borough Election Board for many years. She was a graduate of Meshoppen High School, class of 1919.

She was preceded in death by a son, Howard Walter Phillips; grandson Howard B. Phillips; brother Charles Raymond Depew; and sister Mildred Robbins.

Arreta is survived by two daughters, Gladys May Sands, Winter Haven, Fla.; Janet Konopelski Howell, Dallas; daughter-in-law Arline Phillips, Tunkhannock; 10 grandchildren, Richard Passmore, Sevierville, Tenn.; Steve Manning, Winter Haven, Fla.; Cathy White, Augusta, Ga.; Beth Bradley, Winter Haven, Fla.; JoAnn Willis, Lakeland, Fla.; John B. Sands, Bradenton, Fla.; Jane Herman, Friendsville; Julia Yadao, Lakeland, Fla.; Joy Sholtis, Winter Haven, Fla.; Marvin Manning, Winter Haven, Fla.; 23 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; four great-great-great-grandchildren; one great-great-great-great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held on Friday at noon at the Harding-Litwin Funeral Home, 123 W. Tioga St., Tunkhannock, with services by the Rev. Brian Hill, pastor of Eaton Baptist Church.

Interment will be in the Sunnyside Cemetery, Tunkhannock. Friends may call an hour before the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the donor’s favorite charity.
