PLAINS TWP.: Family Service Association of Wyoming Valley has named Andy Mehalshick, WBRE-TV news co-anchor, as honorary chairman of its fifth annual charity event, “Lights of Broadway Gala and Silent Auction.” The event will be held April 21 from 6 to 11 p.m. at the East Mountain Inn. Dance music will be provided by “The Poet” and Bartikowsky Jewelers will sponsor a Diamond Hunt with this year’s prize being a beautiful diamond necklace. A silent auction will take place throughout the evening with beautiful gifts, trips, gift certificates and sports packages being offered to the highest bidder. Grand prize is a trip for two to New York City which will include hotel accommodations, meals, Broadway show tickets, museum tickets, Ground Zero walking tour and more.

Mehalshick’s “Stranger Danger” series, which airs Thursdays at 5:30 p.m., is dedicated to helping parents keep their children safe and his predator series has educated parents and the community on the dangers awaiting their children on the internet. A Wilkes University graduate, Mehalshick first joined WBRE-TV in 1985. He has won numerous journalism awards and his reporting has been recognized by the Associated Press, the Pennsylvania Chief’s of Police Association, and the Pennsylvania State Attorney General.
He is also involved in the community helping raise money with the American Cancer Society, Helping Hands, and Make-A-Wish Telethons and has served on numerous community boards and supports other agencies including the Salvation Army, American Red Cross, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and the Volunteer Center of Greater Hazleton. He and his wife, Mary, and their daughter, Jacqueline, live in the Hazleton Area.
