ASHLEY – Holy Rosary Post 274, Catholic War Veterans, will conduct Memorial Day services Monday.
A Mass will take place at 7:30 a.m. for deceased and living members at Holy Rosary Church. Services will follow outdoors at the post marker. The group will assemble at Cook Street to participate in the parade, ending at Firemen’s Park.
Participants will reassemble at the veterans’ plot at St. Mary’s Cemetery for concluding services, then return to the post home for a social hour. Members are asked to report to the post home before 7:15 a.m.
DUPONT – VFW Post 4909 will meet at 8 a.m. Monday at the post home, Main Street.
Placing of the wreaths will begin at 8:30 a.m. at Polish National Cemetery; then onto Sacred Heart of Jesus Cemetery to place a wreath.
Parade lineup is at 10 a.m. The annual Memorial Day service will begin immediately after the parade on the borough building lawn.
HUNLOCK CREEK – The Oakdale Cemetery Association will hold its Memorial Day activities Monday at the Oakdale Methodist Church Hall and Cemetery at the western end of Oakdale Drive.
A service will take place at 10:30 a.m. in the cemetery where children will decorate the graves of soldiers.
LAFLIN – The borough will conduct a Memorial Day service at 11:15 a.m. Monday by the monument, corner of Main and Market streets. A parade to the monument will start at 11 a.m. from the Municipal Building on Laflin Road.
LUZERNE COUNTY – Joint Memorial Services will be performed Sunday by Cmdr. Joe O’Malley, American Legion Post 781, Mountain Top; Cmdr. Edmund Rusczyk, American Legion Post 228, Dorrance Township; Cmdr. Thomas McGovern, American Legion Post 673, Ashley; and Cmdr. Alfred Gonshor, Slocum VFW Post 7918.
These services will take place at the following locations: Slocum VFW Post 7918, Veteran’s Memorial Monument at 10 a.m.; St. Mary’s Cemetery, Dorrance Township, at 11:15 p.m.; Emmanuel Cemetery, Dorrance Township, at noon; Albert Cemetery, Wright Township, at 12:30 p.m.; American Legion Memorial, Rice Township, Post 781, at 1 p.m., there will be a special service honoring all prisoners of all wars past and present, Rusczyk, O’Malley, Gonshor and McGovern will officiate.
A luncheon will be served at American Legion Post 781, Mountain Top, Social Club, after all of the services on Sunday.
NEWPORT TWP. – Chester F. Stzalka Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8353, in conjunction with American Legion Post 539, both of Glen Lyon, will conduct Memorial Day services Monday at several cemeteries in the Glen Lyon area.
All post members who plan to participate are asked to be at American Legion Post 539, 62 Newport St., by 9 a.m.
OLD FORGE – The annual Memorial Day Parade, sponsored by Old Forge American Legion Post 513, will begin at 10 a.m. Monday. The starting point will be at Main and Grace streets, then travel up Main Street to Moosic Road and continue onto Old Forge Cemetery where ceremonies will be held.
Any groups that have participated in past parades are encouraged to attend and are asked to gather at 9:30 a.m. Any local groups or organizations that would like to march in the parade should call 457-1029.
PLAINS TWP. – Lani VFW Post 6325 will hold its Memorial Day services at 11 a.m. Monday at the post home, 35-37 Cleveland St.
The VFW firing and color guard will perform the salute followed by the playing of “Taps.”
The Rev. Michael J. Kirwin, St. Maria Goretti Roman Catholic Church, will offer the invocation prayer. Robert Partington, VFW Post commander, will head the services consisting of the laying of the memorial wreaths and half-staffing of the U.S. flag.
RICE TWP. – American Legion Mountain Post 781 will hold its annual Memorial Day services Sunday. Members who wish to participate should meet at the Post Home on Chaplin Nolan Drive at 10 a.m.
There will also be a candlelight service at the Post Memorial at dusk.
SUGAR NOTCH – American Legion Post 796 will conduct a memorial service at 11 a.m. Monday at the monument adjacent to the borough building.
Coalville Lodge 474, F&AM, will dedicate a new flag pole provided by the lodge. The public is invited.
WARRIOR RUN – American Legion Post 176 will conduct Memorial Day services at 10 a.m. Monday on Front Street.
WEST WYOMING – Retired Army National Guard Maj. Gen. Joseph F. Perugino will be the principal speaker at the Memorial Day services hosted by the Italian-American Veterans of Luzerne County Post 1 at 11 a.m. Sunday at Independent Italian Cemetery, Stites Street, West Wyoming.
The cemetery detail will meet at 9 a.m. Saturday at the cemetery.
WILKES-BARRE – The Luzerne County Vietnam Veterans Memorial Committee will hold a candlelight service at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the courthouse lawn, North River Street.
WILKES-BARRE – The Parsons Lions Club will host a Memorial Day Parade at 10 a.m. Monday.
The parade will assemble at 9:30 a.m. at the former VFW parking lot on Scott Street and follow the regular parade route through Parsons up to the Firehouse on Scott Street, where a memorial service will be held. For information, call Charlotte Raup at 822-4583.
WILKES-BARRE TWP. – American Legion Post 815 will hold a Memorial Day program on Monday.
A memorial Mass will be held at 8 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, East Northampton Street. All deceased veterans of Post 815 will be honored.
The parade begins at 10 a.m., starting at the junior high school and proceeding east on Northampton Street to Spruce Street, to Willow Street, Chestnut Street and ending at the post home.
Services will begin at 11 a.m. outside the post home.
WYOMING – The fourth annual Festive Fair will take place at 9 a.m. Monday before and after the Wyoming Memorial Day parade, Eighth Street and Wyoming Avenue. Proceeds benefit the Wyoming Ambulance company.
