Scranton site target of immigration raid

SCRANTON — Federal, state and local officials raided a factory in Scranton on Thursday, looking for people who may be in the United States illegally.

The raid began around 8:15 a.m. at North American Manufacturing, police said. The company makes cots, field packs, artillery packs and mailboxes for the U.S. military.

A plant manager told WNEP-TV that nearly 40 people were taken into custody, and some had worked at the plant for as long as 10 years.

Employees who were inside during the raid said workers were told to shut off the machines, and federal agents began interviewing workers.

Those taken into custody were loaded into a van, cars and an Immigration and Customs Enforcement bus. It is unclear where they were taken.
