Meuser concedes in phone call to Hackett

But Meuser spokesman says it’s too early to talk about supporters backing Hackett.

Dan Meuser called Chris Hackett Wednesday morning around 8 and wished him luck.

Meuser refused to concede Tuesday night, but results showed that Hackett was the victor in the race for the Republican nomination in the 10th Congressional District.

Eric Wallace, Meuser’s campaign spokesman, said it was too early to talk about Meuser’s supporters backing Hackett, saying the healing process must begin.

“Dan has been encouraging people to vote Republican since he was 10 years old, and that’s not going to change,” Wallace said.

Hackett, of Kingston Township, was gracious in his response to Meuser’s concession.

“I think Dan deserves a lot of credit for running a good, smart campaign,” Hackett said. “He spent a lot of money on this race and worked very hard.”

Hackett said he was gratified by the results and looks forward to another spirited campaign in the fall.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of State Web site, Hackett received 33,604 votes to Meuser’s 30,636.

Incumbent freshman Democrat Chris Carney received 70,643 votes to earn his party’s nomination.

Hackett said he knows he has work to do to unify the party that was split during the hotly contested race. Negative ads dominated the news in the last two weeks of the campaign, and Hackett said he has already started calling elected Republican officials to schedule meetings.

“I think like most times in a hotly contested primary, both sides have to have the best interests of the party at heart,” Hackett said. “I believe everyone will close ranks and work together in the general election.”

Wallace said Meuser, of Harveys Lake, would only say, “We are disappointed. Our many supporters throughout the district expected us to win and effectively represent them in the general election and in Congress.”
