Coughlin holds on to advance to quarterfinals

PLAINS TWP. — Ron Coskey went 3-for-4 with four RBI, as Coughlin held on for a 6-5 win over Wyoming Area on Thursday in a District 2 baseball Class 3A first-round game at Hilldale Park.

Coskey also threw 6 1/3 innings to pick up the win on the mound.

Jordan Ramirez knocked in the other two runs for the fifth-seeded Crusaders (9-7), who will play at Tunkhannock in today’s quarterfinal round.

Josh McDermott hit a two-run homer for the No. 12 Warriors (2-13) and added a double.

Henry Messinger hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game 5-5, but the No. 9 Hornets responded with a six-run fifth inning to advance to the 3A quarterfinals against Pittston Area.

Pat Murray (3-3, 4 RBI) also homered for the eighth-seeded Mountaineers, who ended their season at 6-9.

The game began on Wednesday but was suspended in the bottom of the third with Honesdale leading 4-1 because of rain.

Tyler Marino doubled for No. 10 Meyers and Mark Lewis went 2-for-2, but the Mohawks (7-8) couldn’t overcome a six-run Dunmore lead in a 2A first round game. The No. 7 Bucks (10-5) advance to the quarterfinals against the Carbondale-Montrose winner.

The sixth-seeded Cougars couldn’t pull off a second straight upset on a long road trip, falling to No. 2 Williamsport in a Class 4A semifinal game.

District 4 Williamsport (11-2) will play Wyoming Valley West in the finals on Wednesday at PNC Field. Hazleton’s season ended at 8-9.

Old Forge 7, Wyo. Seminary 1

The No. 4 Blue Knights (4-12) concluded the year with a loss at top-seeded Old Forge in the semifinals.

The Blue Devils will try to defend their D2 Class A title on Wednesday at PNC Field, where they will face the winner of the Northwest Area-Susquehanna game, which was postponed to today.

SOFTBALL Dallas 5, Crestwood 1 Class 3A Quarterfinal

Ally Evans struck out 13 batters across seven innings to give Dallas the win in a Class 3A quarterfinal. Erin Belles homered and Danielle Harding laced a two RBI single.

Crestwood’s Annie Klein doubled while Alex Plaviak hit an RBI single. Lauren Hochreiter took the loss, pitching six innings with six strikeouts.

Amanda Cardone doubled and tripled, knocking in three RBI to lead No. 5 Nanticoke in a District quarterfinal.

Jen Harnischfeger and Sara Bertoni also doubled in for the Trojans. Jess Higgins was 3-for-4 while pitching seven innings with four strikeouts for the win.

Jeanee Rabel doubled and struck out eight in the loss for Mid Valley.

Games postponed

Six games in the District 2 tournament were postponed from Thursday to today due to the lingering rain.

Three games in Class 3A involving WVC teams were also moved. Those games are Tunkhannock at Valley View, Pittston Area at Honesdale and Berwick at Abington Heights. Another WVC team, Hanover Area will play Carbondale today in the 2A quarters.

In Class 4A, the quarterfinal matchup between Wallenpaupack and Scranton will be played today, while the Class A quarterfinal between Forest City and Susquehanna will also be held today.

In Class 2A and 3A, if a semifinal was scheduled for today and the teams are playing in a quarterfinal, the semis will be held Saturday.

COLLEGES TRACK AND FIELD Rogers competes at NCAAs

Misericordia’s Eric Rogers competed at the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships on Thursday at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

Rogers finished tied for seventh in his flight in the long jump with a leap of 21-feet, 6 3/4-inches. Francis Nugent of the University of the Redlands won Rogers’ flight and went on to win the national title with a jump of 23-feet, 6 3/4-inches.
