Eleanor M. Yozwiak, of Plains, passed away Wednesday afternoon at Riverstreet Manor, Wilkes-Barre.
Born January 3, 1920, in the Midvale section of Plains Township, she was a daughter of John and Clara Szymaczek Lemek. She was a graduate of Plains Memorial High School, class of 1938. After the death of her husband, Clement, in August 1959, she enrolled in the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital School of Nursing and graduated as a licensed practical nurse in 1961. She was co-owner of Clem’s Floor Covering. She was also employed as a photo colorist at Sicienski Photo Studio in Wilkes-Barre. She retired in 1985 after working at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital as a licensed practical nurse for 24 years.
During her lengthly illness, her son Richard was her primary caregiver and her sister Adele Lemek provided much needed support and companionship.
Eleanor enjoyed bowling and trips to Atlantic City. She loved working outside and cooking inside for her family. She was very proud of her family and her Polish heritage, always sending packages and letters to relatives in Poland. She always welcomed Polish seminarians into her home and treated them as family. As a young woman, she was a member of the Krakowiak Dance Club. She was a member of SS Peter & Paul Church, Plains, and was a member of the Choir and Altar and Rosary Society. She volunteered for making pierogies and helping out at parish bazaars. She was a charter member of the Hudson Servicemen’s Association Auxiliary, Hudson, and was a member of Rotary Anns of Plains Township.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clement, in 1959, and her parents. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Walter Lemek; sisters Stella Lemek, Genevieve Canterini and Angela Lemek.
She is survived by her son and caregiver, Richard Yozwiak; daughter Jane and her husband, Charles Grohowski, Jackson, N.J.; son Alan and his wife, Paula Yozwiak, Larksville; sisters Adele Lemek and Emilie Hoffman, of Plains; Mary Kuzminski, of Wilkes-Barre; grandchildren Susan Eastburn and husband Norman, Jackson, N.J.; Kristen McGee and her husband, Joseph, Sicklerville, N.J.; Charles (Chuck) Grohowski, Ridgewood, N.J.; Karlene Yozwiak and Kara Yozwiak, Larksville; great-grandchildren Shane, Logan and Sawyer McGee; Christopher and Jonathan Eastburn; numerous nephews and nieces; her constant four-legged companion, Blue.
Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 9 a.m. from the Michael J. Mikelski Funeral Home, 293 South River Street, Plains. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 at SS. Peter & Paul Church, Plains. Interment will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Plains.
