Joseph J. Davis, 87, of the Parsons section of Wilkes-Barre, passed away Wednesday at Guardian Elder Care, Sheatown.
He was born September 8, 1920, in Laflin, a son of the late Joseph and Myrtle Zilk Davis. He attended the Laflin schools and West Pittston High School and was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater.
Following his discharge from the Navy he served as the Laflin Police Chief. He was also employed in the coal mine industry working at the Laflin Breaker, Pine Ridge Breaker, and for the R. A. Davis Coal Company. Mr. Davis was later employed in construction working for J & H Concrete and Sordoni Construction Company. He was a member of the former Parsons V.F.W. Post 6227; Parsons Lions Club; Plains American Legion, Post 558; Kingston V.F.W. Anthracite Post 283; and Laborers Union 215.
He was preceded in death by his brothers Harry and Frederick Davis; sisters Myrtle Sartin, Florence Roman and Marion Letinski.
Surviving are his wife, the former Veronica Gober, to whom he was married 55 years; son Joseph Davis Jr., Wilkes-Barre; brother Halford Davis, New Jersey; nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. from E. Blake Collins Funeral Home, 159 George Avenue, Wilkes-Barre. Services will be conducted by Rev. K.
