Montag and McCain out and about together.

I can’t even remember the last time I wrote about Britney Spears in this column. I believe it is a positive sign that for once I and the rest of the world went weeks without documenting her trials and tribulations. The woman went through more than you would ever wish on your worst enemy. Many speculated that Spears dealt with everything from bipolar disorder to postpartum depression. Pile on the constant attention from the paparazzi and living in Los Angeles, and maybe you can realize why months ago the Associated Press prepared the obituary of Spears. The AP cited her eccentric lifestyle and trips in and out of hospitals as the reason for doing so.

This week, Britney made breaking news on the networks and blogs alike. For the time being, ex-husband Kevin Federline gained full custody of their sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James, ages 2 and 1, respectively. It isn’t as bad as it sounds for the pop mom, as she will continue to receive overnight visits with her kids; in the past month, Brit’s custodial time doubled. It is expected that Spears will ask for 50/50 custody after the conservator-ship guarding her estate expires.

The settlement also carries monetary consequences for Britney’s bank. TMZ reports that Federline’s monthly child support check gets a $5,000 bump to $20,000. K-Fed’s lawyer, Mark Vincent Kaplan, will receive $200,000 as a part of the deal.

Furthermore, the settlement allows the court to vacate a trial date — so don’t expect K-Fed and Brit to battle in court, at least for the immediate future.

HEIDI AND THE NEXT FIRST FAMILY?

MTV “The Hills” star Heidi Montag shopped and dined in L.A. last week with 23-year-old Meghan McCain. The daughter of presumptive Republican nominee John McCain and the realty TV bombshell entertained paparazzi that were unaware who Meghan’s father was. Montag already threw her hat into the race, backing the Arizona Senator emphatically. Senator McCain responded in a statement — wait, it gets better — thanking Heidi for her support and insisting that he never misses an episode of “The Hills.”

If that isn’t a story made in Hollywood, I don’t know what is.

The younger McCain can certainly relate to Montag. TMZ’s Leslie Harris tells me that Meghan is both an aspiring fashion designer and blogger. Heidi released her fashion line this year, Heidiwood, and of course, may know a thing or two about blogs (or at least, being covered by them).

Avid-“Hills” viewer and Presidential nominee McCain was set to stop in Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday for a town hall meeting inside the F.M. Kirby Center.

NO TUNA — JESS BOMBSHELL’S COUNTRY DEBUT

Jessica Simpson’s first country performance went less than stellar, according to an article in The Kenosha News, the local newspaper in Twin Lakes, Wis.

Tony Romo’s girlfriend entered and exited the stage to a chorus of both cheers and jeers. Some enjoyed her set, while others found her country music attempt “irritating.”

Simpson celebrated her 28th birthday last week.
