For the last two years, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins head coach Todd Richards shared a goal with his players – they all wanted to make the National Hockey League.

On Tuesday, Richards, 41, achieved his when he accepted an assistant coach position with the San Jose Sharks, according to sources.

Representatives for both teams would neither confirm or deny that Richards accepted the post, but San Jose Sharks spokesman Ryan Stenn did say the team has signed its assistant coaches and will be announcing them today.

When contacted on Tuesday, Richards declined to comment on the situation.

In two seasons coaching the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, Richards compiled a 98-49-5-8 record in the regular season. His record in the playoffs during that span is 19-14, including an appearance in the Calder Cup Finals last season.

According to sources, assistant coach Dan Bylsma, 37, is the top choice to take over for Richards, and Pittsburgh could fill the position next week.

Bylsma was not available for comment.

He joined the Penguins as an assistant coach in 2006, and previously served in the same capacity with the New York Islanders in 2005-2006 and Cincinnati Mighty Ducks in 2004-2005.
