Diocese appeal exceeds goal with $5.4M

SCRANTON – The Diocese of Scranton released the final report on its annual appeal this week, and while the fund drive again exceeded the goal – raising nearly $5.4 million when the target was $5.3 million – only six Luzerne County parishes met their individual goals.

St. Frances X. Cabrini, Carverton, raised $27,275, 156 percent of its goal. The diocese gives a rebate to parishes that exceed their goals, and St. Frances will see nearly $7,400 of that money returned to parish coffers. All told, rebates totaled $155,384 across the 11-county diocese, with the biggest chunk -- $50,372 going back to Monroe County, where eight of 11 parishes exceeded their goals.

Other Luzerne County parishes that met or exceeded their goals and their percentage rates are St. Martha, Hunlock Creek, 126 percent; St. Mary Annunciation, Kingston, 101 percent; Holy Name-St. Mary’s, Swoyersville, 100 percent; Maternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Wilkes-Barre, 105 percent; and St. Dominic, Wilkes-Barre, 120 percent.

The county is split into four deaneries and no deanery came close to hitting 100 percent of its target. The western Luzerne County deanery raised $550,881 for 66 percent of its goal; the northern Luzerne Deanery raised $279,153 for 52 percent of its goal; the Wilkes-Barre Deanery raised $512,797 for 71 percent of its goal; and the southern Luzerne deanery raised 280,987 for 53 percent of its goal.

The report also broke down where the money goes: $760,616 (15 percent) to education; $101,415 (2 percent) to soup kitchens and shelters; $912,739 (18 percent) to communication and evangelization; $760,616 (15 percent) to clergy retirement; $177,477 (3.5 percent) to the Fatima Retreat Center; $912,739 (18 percent) to parish life and evangelization; $152,123 (3 percent) for parish incentives; $354,954 (7 percent) for diocesan facilities; $507,077, (10 percent) to clergy formation and education; and $431,017 (8.5 percent) to cover the cost of the campaign.
