Royals open golf season with win

Neil Brown shot a two-under par 34 to lead Holy Redeemer to a 148-214 win against Meyers in the Wyoming Valley Conference golf season-opener for the Royals. The match was played at the par-36 Wilkes-Barre Golf Course. Other leading scorers for Holy Redeemer were Michael Napkora (37), Don Dereamer (38) and Casey Judge (39).

John Lisman led Meyers with a 39. Other low scorers for the Mohawks were Mike Smith (52), Mike Lehnert (58) and John Blaski (59).

Wyoming Area 179 Coughlin 187

Jamie Bresnahan shot an even-par 35 to lead the Warriors in a match played at Fox Hill Country Club. Dan Valenti shot a 47 for Wyoming Area (3-1), while Vicky Petrosky and Nick Rydzewski finished with a 48 and 49, respectively.

For Coughlin, Mike Dauber led the way with a 42. Joe Jaffrey and Rich Andres each shot a 48, while Joe Patrai finished with a 49.

Hanover Area 166, GAR 185

GAR’s Christopher Schiel shot a 40 to earn medalists honors, but Hanover Area still managed to walk away with the victory at Hollenback Golf Course.

Scoring for Hanover Area were Mark Wasickanin (41), Mike Szklanny (41), Steve Nealon (41) and Ricky Baran (43). Scoring for GAR were William Pickett (47), Bryan Carey (48) and Philip Richards (50).

Wyoming Seminary 165, Lake-Lehman 189

John Henry and Evan Leas each shot a 39 to share medalist honors and lead Seminary past Lake-Lehman at Huntsville Golf Club.

Also scoring for Seminary were Will Bevevino (43) and Mike Hirthler (44). Scoring for Lehman were Jedd Heath (41), Jonathan Thomas (44), Art Lockard (46) and Tom Abbotantuno (58).

H.S. GIRLS TENNIS Tunkhannock 3, Pittston Area 2

Tunkhannock won at No. 1 singles and both doubles matches to edge Pittston Area. The No. 2 doubles team of Annie Oliver and Kallin Karnopp won in a three-set battle – 7-6 (10-8), 4-6,. 6-3 – to clinch the win for the Tigers.

Valley West 3, Hazleton Area 2

The Lady Spartans won all three singles matches to defeat host Hazleton Area. The Lady Cougars responded by winning both doubles matches.
