Wilkes writers receive honors

Five student writers from Wilkes University’s campus newspaper, The Beacon, received honorable mention in the Story of the Year competition at the Associated Collegiate Press “Best of Show” awards. Student reporters Carlton Holmes, Newark, N.J.; Andrew Seaman, Forest City; Marissa Phillips, Effort; Andee Scarantino, Old Forge; and Nicole Frail, Wilkes-Barre, were nominated for their investigative article on race and business practices in the Wilkes-Barre community. The Beacon competed in the diversity category against universities such as Duke University, University of Southern California and Kansas State University, whose newspapers finished first, second, and third, respectively.
