Anthony John Weiss Sr., 82, of Wilkes-Barre, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather, died on Tuesday, July 21, 2009, at home surrounded by his loving family.
Anthony was born in Wilkes-Barre on Sept. 13, 1926, a son of William and Mathilda Weiss. He attended Meyers High School and he was a U.S. Army Veteran, during World War II. Prior to retiring, he was employed by the Wilkes-Barre Post Office as a mail carrier. He was earlier employed by the Veterans Administration in Wilkes-Barre.
Mr. Weiss was member of St. Boniface Church in Wilkes-Barre, where he served for many years as an acolyte. He also served for many years as a member of the Board of Directors and President of the St. Nicholas/St. Boniface Credit Union.
Anthony was a loving and devoted family man. He especially loved to spend time with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and his great-great-granddaughter. He was an avid baseball fan who loved to watch baseball at any level from Little League to Major League.
He was preceded in death by a brother, William Weiss; and by his sisters, Mathilda Weiss, Eleanor Garman and Katherine Domzalski.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Doris Dillon Weiss; daughter Shirley Wheeler and her husband, David Garrity, Wilkes-Barre; sons Anthony J. Weiss Jr. and his wife, Kathy, Wilkes-Barre; Kevin Weiss and his wife, Shelly, Wilkes-Barre; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; sister Doris Tomalis, Camp Hill; nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday at 9 a.m. from the Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, 89 Park Ave., Wilkes-Barre, with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 9:30 in St. Boniface Church, 225 Blackman St., Wilkes-Barre. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover Township.
