James William Salus, 70, of Fairfax, Va., passed away at Fair Oaks Hospital in Fairfax on Thursday, August 13, 2009, at 10 p.m.
Jim grew up in Wyoming, Pa., and in 1957 left his home on East Fourth Street to enter the U.S. Air Force, serving his country for more than 30 years. During that time, he served with the Strategic Air Command, HQ USAF, Air Force Technical Applications Center, the Inspector General, and Air Force Systems Command.
In these assignments, he was stationed all over the world – including the Ascension Islands, Thule, Greenland; Reykjavik, Iceland; American Samoa; Fiji; Japan; Guam; the Philippines; Thailand; and Australia.
He was a graduate of Troy State University.
He was preceded in death by his father, Vincent George Salus of Wyoming, Pa.; and a daughter, Marie Salus.
He is survived by his wife, Susan Cuffage Cooksey Salus, of Fairfax, Va.; his mother, Ann Veronica Yakobitis of Wyoming, Pa.; two sons, James (Holly), of Altamonte Springs, Fla., and Brian (Kenza) of London, England; two stepsons, Norvel Perry Cooksey III. (Maggie), of Lothian, Md., and Sylvester Pritchard (Deb), of Tampa, Fla.; a sister, Joan Connaghan (Tom), of Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.; a brother, William (Lena), of Wilmington, Del.; four grandchildren, Amir and Zaki, of London; Brock, of Altamonte Springs; and Tristan, of Lothian; and a host of nieces; nephews; and cousins.
A memorial prayer service was held on Tuesday, August 18, 2009, at the Robert J. Murphy Funeral Home in Falls Church, Virginia.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the chapel at Fort Myer, Virginia, on November 18, 2009, at 10:45 a.m. with burial immediately following at Arlington National Cemetery.
