Old Forge stops Breznitsky, MMI

Blue Devils claim District 2 Class A championship with convincing victory.

PITTSTON – With a constantly changing zone defense Old Forge held MMI Prep’s scoring maching Tyler Breznitsky to 10 points and rode the inside-out play of Gabe Wilson and Corey Hodick to a 55-41 win to secure the District 2 Class A championship Friday night.

“I don’t think there’s any question (Breznitsky) is one of the most talented players in the area,” said Semenza. “The game plan for us was when he had the ball, make him get rid of it as quick as he can.”

Starting the game with four players in a zone and one man following Breznitsky wherever he went, Old Forge kept Breznitsky in check, holding him to four points in the first quarter, while finding no such trouble scoring.

The guard-forward tandem of Hodick and Wilson scored 12 of the Blue Devils’ first 15 points, with Hodick connecting twice from three-point range and Wilson scoring on an array of post moves.

Hodick kept his hot hand going in the second quarter while taking on the role of distributor. Inbetween a jumper from three-point range and a bucket in transition, Hodick found teammates Anthony Koulanavage and Matt Rava for two quick scores, extending the lead to 24-17 at the half.

“We thought we had an advantage inside, we thought we had better size, we have some athleticism inside,” said Semenza of his teams offensive play. “Our gaurds knocked down some big three’s and once that happened I felt we were in pretty good shape.”

The Preppers found some momentum in the third, putting the ball in Breznitsky’s hands every trip down the court. The senior found his way to a layup and two assists, but Old Forge kept pace behind Rava’s eight points in the quarter, setting the stage for the devilish duo of Hodick and Wilson to take over the fourth quarter.

After knocking down his fourth and final three of the night, Hodick found Wilson underneath for back-to-back layups, as the tandem scored 13 of Old Forge’s final 16 points, including going a combined 4-for-5 from the free-throw line.

Old Forge will now prepare for the state-playoffs, with matchup to come Friday against either Sullivan County or Mansfield. MMI Prep will have a Tuesday date with the winner of the District I third seed, which will be either Christopher Dock or Church Farm.
