WILLIAMSPORT – Five Wyoming Valley Conference wrestlers advanced to the semifinals of the PIAA Class 2A Northeast Regional Tournament with quarterfinal wins Friday night at Williamsport High School.
Vito Pascone of Meyers remained unbeaten with a 13-11 win against Mifflinburg’s David Sheesley in the 103-pound division. In the 145-pound division, GAR’s Noah Blackwell advanced with an 13-0 major decision against Curt Schneider of Lewisburg.
The 171-pound division is shaping up to be quite interesting as top-seeded Shane Stark of Lake-Lehman and Adam Goeringer of Dallas each advanced to the semifinals. Stark defeated Kegan Polastre of Shamokin, 7-4, while Goeringer edged Mike Clark of Wyalusing, 8-6.
A win by Stark and Goeringer during this morning’s action would set up a rematch of the District 2 championship match won by Stark, 5-3.
Lake-Lehman’s Roger Jayne was the other WVC wrestler to advance to the semifinals. The senior defeated Zach Tedesco of Troy, 3-1, in the 215-pound weight class.
District 2 advanced nine wrestlers to the semifinals. In all, seven district champions – including five from District 2 – fell on the opening night of the tournament.
Benton leads the team standings with 18.5 points. Athens is second with 15 and Shamokin and Towanda are tied for third place with 14.
