Chaos in Babe Ruth World Series

EGG HARBOR, N.J. — Pitcher Kristan Baker blasted a two-run home run and struck out nine to pick up the win as the Luzerne County Chaos earned a trip to the U-16 Babe Ruth World Series with a 6-1 victory over Hoboken, N.J., in the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship on Monday.

The Chaos is one of 10 teams that will compete in the Babe Ruth World Series, beginning next week in Concord, N.H. Their first-round opponent is still to be determined.

Baker slammed her two-run blast in the top of the first inning to set the tone for the winners.

The Chaos took a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning on a two-out single by Sarah Bertoni that scored Sami Cragle. However, Hoboken rallied to tie the game at 3-3 on Lisa Bakkoi’s two-run double off Baker in to the fifth inning.

However, the Chaos widened the lead to 5-3 in the sixth. Amanda Cardone scored on a single by Danielle Tuzinski, and Alex Hoops knocked in Tuzinski with a fielder’s choice. The Chaos surged ahead 6-3 when Cragle doubled and then scored on a two-base throwing error by Hoboken.

American Legion Baseball Senior Legion Ell Named MVP

Plains outfielder Zach Ell was named the MVP of the East-West All-Star Game in Harrisburg on Sunday.

The Holy Redeemer senior went 2-for-2 in the game and had two RBI as the East defeated the West, 8-2.

He became the first player from the Wyoming Valley League to claim MVP honors since Greater Pittston’s Chris Tonte accomplished the feat in 2005.

Tonte, a Pittston Area grad, recently wrapped up his second season playing at Division I Pittsburgh.

JUNIOR LEGION REGIONAL TOURNAMENT Swoyersville 10, Abington 0

Tommy Alexander, Tyler Potoski and Bobby Polachek each had three hits, as Swoyersville cruised to a six-inning victory in a quarterfinal contest of the double-elimination tournament.

Matt Zielen allowed just one hit and struck out eight in five innings of work to earn the win. Joey Pechulis added two hits.

Swoyersville improved to 2-1 in the tournament and will play in the semifinal round at 4 p.m. today in Kutztown.

SECTION 5 TOURNAMENT 10-11 BASEBALL Mountain Top 12, Abington 6

Jay Popson slugged two home runs and earned the win on the mound, as Mountain Top captured the Section 5 championship at North Scranton.

Up next is a trip to the state tournament, which begins Friday in Conyngham.

Popson struck out four in four innings and Matt Mickowski also picked up four Ks in relief.

Matt Dacey (two doubles), Ryan Magin (double), Logan Knapp and Conlan McAndrew each had two hits apiece. Also chipping in on offense were Mike Vital, Matt Darden, Josh Malkemes and Robbie Hopkins.

Section 5 Tournament Junior Softball Nanticoke/Newport wins title

Hannah Rubasky doubled in Gabby Grabowski in the ninth inning as Nanticoke/Newport won the title with a 6-4 victory over Carbino Club.

The win came after Carbino won 4-3 to force a second game.

Brooke Chapin followed with a double to score Rubasky, who pitched the final two innings for the victory.

In the opener, Sammy Gow tripled, doubled and singled for Nanticoke/Newport. Katie Kowalski added a double and single.

Nanticoke/Newport will play in the state tournament that starts Thursday at Back Mountain Little League.

Wilkes-Barre Rec Tournament Forty Fort 10, Plains 6

Jeremy Kozich was the winning pitcher with eight strikeouts and allowed six hits, while Michael Conway came in to pitch in relief fanning two and only allowing one hit.

At the plate, Logan Zavada was 3-for-3 and scored four times and drove in three, while Jared Kozich had two hits and two RBI and Jeremy Kozich had two hits as Forty Fort claimed the tournament championship.

Michael Wozniak (2 hits, RBI) and Derek Gebhart (2 hits, home run, 2 RBI) contributed for Plains.
