Michael Capitano, of Jenkins Township, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008, at home.
He and his wife, Leona (Tuttilmond) Capitano, were married 55 years.
He was born Dec. 30, 1916, in Pittston. He was a son of the late Antonia (Terrana) and Gaetano Capitano. He was a graduate of Pittston High School. He worked for PennDOT for 39 years as a principal assistant superintendent. He was an Army veteran of World War II with the rank of tech sergeant. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He received several medals, including two Bronze stars and an arrowhead for beach heads at Pellilu, Okinawa. He also participated in the cleanup at Guadalcanal. He also served in the Transportation Division and was awarded the Expert Marksmanship Medal. He was a Disabled American Veteran.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Sam and Angelo Capitano.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are sons, Michael A., and his wife, Maureen Capitano, Pittston; Louis and his wife, Gloria Capitano, Pittston; grandchildren, Maria and Kristen Capitano; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be Monday at 9 a.m. from the Graziano Funeral Home, Inc., 700 Township Blvd., Pittston Township, with Mass of Christian Burial in St. Rocco’s RC Church, Pittston, with the Rev. Daniel Schwebs, O.S.J., pastor, as celebrant. Interment will be in West Pittston Cemetery. Friends may call Sunday, 5 to 8 p.m.
