Mrs. Elizabeth S. “Betty” Davenport, 102, a resident of Hughestown, died Saturday, January 3, 2009 at Wesley Village, Jenkins Township, where she had been a guest since December 24, 2008.
Mrs. Davenport was born in Hughestown, a daughter of the late Frank and Susanna Sutter Stahl and attended the Hughestown Borough schools. She had been employed by the former S.S. Kresge Co., Pittston, for several years. For more than 50 years she has been a home demonstrator with the Stanley Home Products Co.
Mrs. Davenport was the oldest resident of Hughestown Borough and the oldest member of St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hughestown, and one of the oldest citizens in Luzerne County. She still resided in the Hughestown home in which she was born and shortly would have observed her 103rd birthday.
She was a lifelong member of St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hughestown, and had been active in the Head Start Program in Luzerne County. She was a past president of the Avoca Senior Citizens Club and had also been a member of the West Wyoming Senior Citizens Club.
Mrs. Davenport was a talented pianist and organist and had entertained at several senior citizen clubs and at other community organizations on a regular basis.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 31 years, Kenneth Davenport, who died in 1960; daughters, Mrs. Betty Sue Scialpi in 1995 and Mrs. Gloria Ardo in 1998; three brothers; and four sisters.
Surviving are daughters, Miss Joann Davenport, at home, and Mrs. Matthew (Ireta) Martinelli, Hughestown; a son, K. Malcolm Davenport, Pittston; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, corner of Rock and Center streets, Hughestown, with the Rev. Robert F. Sauers, pastor, St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Wilkes-Barre, officiating. Interment will be in Hughestown Cemetery.
Friends may call Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the H. Merritt Hughes Funeral Home Inc., 211 Luzerne Avenue, West Pittston, and at the church on Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. to service time. Friends and family are asked to go directly to St. Peter’s Church on Tuesday. The family requests that flowers be omitted and that memorial donations be made to St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Rock & Center Streets, Hughestown, Pa. 18640.
