Joanne Nelson Pineno

Joanne Nelson Pineno, 65, a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, passed away January 3, 2009 after a fulfilling and loving life with her family and friends.

Joanne was a daughter of the late Victor L. and Ruth M. Nelson. Joanne was born in Scranton, Pa., and lived the last 38 years in Richmond, Va. She grew up in Wyoming, and was Valedictorian of Wyoming Memorial High School and a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Bloomsburg University.

Upon graduation from college, Joanne taught at elementary schools in Kingston and Virginia Beach, Va. After arriving in Richmond in 1970, she taught first and third grade at Longan Elementary School for 19 years. In retirement, she continued to spend time at Longan assisting teachers and greeting siblings and children of her former students.

Joanne was an avid reader whose favorite reading spot was on her “perch” at Virginia Beach. For a more competitive outing, she always looked forward to a game of Trains with her friends or family.

Joanne was a past member of the Westhampton Junior Women’s Club. She was a current member of Dunlora Woman’s Club and Tuckahoe Woman’s Club and volunteered for numerous nonprofit organizations.

She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Francis A. Pineno; two sons, Christian Francis Pineno and his wife, Denise, of Charlotte, N.C. and Justin Nelson Pineno and his wife, Tara, of West Chester, Pa; three grandchildren, Ashleigh Grace, Alexis Anne and Sarah Kathryn; and two brothers, Richard Nelson of Morristown, N.J., and Jack Nelson of Alexandria, Va.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the Parham Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 1771 North Parham Road, Richmond, Va. A funeral service will be held at 11a.m. on Tuesday at River Road Presbyterian Church, Richmond, Va., followed by a reception in the fellowship hall. Private interment will be at Westhampton Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Henrico Education Foundation, P.O. Box 23120, Richmond, Va. 23223-0420. The family would like to thank all of her caregivers for their professional and compassionate care, especially the nursing and support staff at MCV-Stony Point.
