Louis ‘Babe’ Mariotti

Louis "Babe" Mariotti, 93, of Old Forge, died Friday evening at his home. His wife of 61 years, Sistina Augustine Mariotti, died on June 3, 2000.

Born in Old Forge, a son of the late Louis and Eugenia Bartelli Mariotti, he was educated in the Old Forge School District. In his earlier years, he was a master carpenter and builder. In 1958 he founded Mariotti Building Products, Old Forge. Louis served his country during World War II in the U.S. Navy as a Sea Bee who was stationed on Wake Island. Prior to his entry into the Navy, he worked in the Philadelphia Shipyards in Chester, Pa.

He was a lifelong parishioner of St. Mary of the Assumption Church, where he served as an altar boy in his youth. Louis also volunteered as an usher at the church for many years.

Louis enjoyed bowling and spending time with his family during the summer at Card Lake in Nicholson. He was very talented in doing work with his hands. He truly loved the family business, Mariotti Building Products, and took tremendous pride in watching his sons and grandsons continue its operation. His greatest accomplishment was moving the operation from Main Street. to its current location off of Moosic Road in Old Forge in 1988.

His family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to Paul Varga, Louis’s caregiver, for virtually never leaving his side. A special debt of gratitude also goes out to Dr. Kenneth Sebastianelli for his unwavering care and concern.

Surviving are three sons, Eugene Mariotti and wife, Jean, Robert Mariotti and Louis Mariotti and wife, Mary Margaret, all of Old Forge; a sister, Lena Lockett, Old Forge; grandchildren, Dr. Louis J. Mariotti and wife, Donna, Atty. Joseph E. Mariotti and wife, Carol, Richard F. Mariotti and wife, Jill, Eugene D. Mariotti Jr. and wife, Jennifer, Robert Mariotti and wife, Karina, Paul Mariotti and wife, Dorothy, Kathleen Petty and husband, David, Louis Mariotti and wife, Michele, Michael Mariotti and wife, Melissa, and Gregory Mariotti; 25 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Enio and John Mariotti; a daughter-in-law, Kathy Mariotti, who died in 2008; and a great grandson, Peter Anthony Mariotti, who died in 2008.

The funeral will be Tuesday at 9:15 a.m. from the Victor M. Ferri Funeral Home, 522 Fallon St., Old Forge, with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Mary of the Assumption Church, West Grace and Lawrence Streets, Old Forge, to be celebrated by the Rev. Joseph F. Cipriano, pastor emeritus, and concelebrated by the Rev. P. Michael J. Kuchera, SJ of Pontificio Instituto Orientale in Maggiore, Rome, Italy. Interment will follow in St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow.
