Mary Metcalf

Mary Metcalf, 88, of the Nativity section of Scranton, died Friday morning in Essa Flory Hospice Center, Lancaster County.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, John J. Healey, killed in action in World War II; and Roy M. Metcalf, who died in December 1993.

Born in Scranton, she was a daughter of Francis Catherine Murphy Burns. She was a member of the Nativity of Our Lord Church and was educated in the Scranton public schools.

Mary was a truly loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Surviving are two daughters, Elizabeth J. Ward, and her husband, Dennis, of Ephrata; and Marsha R. Phillips and her husband, Willard, of Fairfax Station, Va.; a son, Robert R. Metcalf and his wife, Joan, of Dallas; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by six siblings.

The funeral will be Tuesday with Mass at 9:30 a.m. in the Nativity of Our Lord Church, celebrated by the Rev. Philip Altavilla. Interment at the Cathedral Cemetery. The family requests that those attending the funeral please proceed directly to the church.

Friends may call Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Neil W. Regan Funeral Home, Inc., 1900 Pittston Avenue, Scranton. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Lancaster County, 685 Good Drive, P.O. Box 4125, Lancaster, Pa. 17604.
