SCRANTON – Lackawanna County Commissioners Michael J. Washo, Corey D. O’Brien and A.J. Munchak will honor recipients of 2009 Arts and Culture project grants and program grants on Tuesday at the Scranton Cultural Center’s Shopland Hall.

The event begins with refreshments at 5:30 p.m. followed by the grant announcements at 6 p.m. Lackawanna County Deputy Director for Arts and Culture Maureen McGuigan also will participate.

HARRISBURG – State Rep. John Yudichak, D-Nanticoke, will introduce legislation that would help address the state pension crisis.

Yudichak’s bill would charge the Legislative Budget and Finance Committee with examining the Pennsylvania State Employees Retirement System and the Pennsylvania Public School Employees Retirement System and make recommendations to limit excessive tax increases on residents while maintaining the integrity of each pension system.

HARRISBURG – Gov. Ed Rendell on Tuesday reappointed Ellen Ferretti, of Dallas, to the state Conservation and Natural Resources Advisory Council.

WEST PITTSTON – Penn State Cooperative Extension is offering a 10-week weight management program called “My New Weigh of Life.”

This program will be conducted by a registered dietitian and will be held on Thursdays from Feb. 19 to April 30, from 6-8 p.m. at Penn State Cooperative Extension, 16 Luzerne Ave., Suite 200, West Pittston. The cost is $75 for materials.

WILKES-BARRE TWP. – The steps throughout the lower bowl seating area at Wachovia Arena will become a route to better health when the American Lung Association hosts its Climb the Arena event on March 7.

The climb begins at 2 p.m.; registration is at 1 p.m.

Participants will walk up and down all of the stairs in the lower level, beginning in Section 101 and ending in Section 120, encompassing 1,224 steps.

The Climb the Arena event requires a $25 registration fee, and participants are required to raise a minimum of $100 for the American Lung Association. Registration deadline is Feb. 28.
