A seminar planned for Wednesday by the Penn State Cooperative Extension on natural-gas drilling has been canceled because of low registration.

The seminar on what construction disturbances to expect from natural-gas drilling will be rescheduled when interest increases.

HARRISBURG – The state Public Utility Commission on Tuesday announced two public hearings this month on the proposed electricity-transmission line from the Susquehanna Steam Electric Station in Salem Township to the Roseland substation in New Jersey.

The meetings will be at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. March 20 at the Top of the World Restaurant and Sports Complex, 1125 Saw Creek Estates, Bushkill.

The 101-mile project, proposed by PPL Corp., would run west of the Susquehanna River through Luzerne County, but would result in very little disturbance in that area, the company said. PPL is also requesting permission to build a substation in Blakely in Lackawanna County to connect to the regional grid.

FAIRVIEW TWP. – At least 10 children at an elementary school in Mountain Top were sent home throughout Tuesday due to either a stomach virus or strep throat, according to Susan Kaminski, secretary for Fairview Elementary School.

The children range in age from kindergarten through sixth grade at Fairview Elementary School, 117 Spruce St., Kaminski said.

More than 700 children attend the elementary school.

Kaminski said it isn’t unusual for the school to send home 10 children in one day.
