Professor to discuss sexual orientation study on youth at Penn State Worthington Scranton

SCRANTON -- Tony D’Augelli, a noted professor and researcher in the field of sexual orientation, will be a guest speaker at Penn State Worthington Scranton.

A professor of human development and associate dean for undergraduate programs and outreach in the College of Health and Human Development at Penn State main campus, D’Augelli will discuss his five-year research project with lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender youths in New York City.

The public is invited to attend his presentation, “Growing Up Gay Today: Voices of Youth,” at the Worthington campus Monday, from noon to 1:30 p.m., in the Study Learning Center’s Sherbine Lounge.

D’Augelli will share excerpts from his interviews and surveys, as well as what gay youth are saying about marriage, families, changes in society and the challenges they still face.

The presentation is co-sponsored by the Human Development and Family Studies program and the Diversity Committee at Penn State.

D’Augelli received his bachelor’s degree in psychological and social sciences from the New College of Hofstra University and his master’s and doctorate degrees in clinical and community psychology from the University of Connecticut.

He received the American Psychological Association’s 2000 Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award, Division 44 (Society for the Psychological Study of Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Issues); the 2001 Monette/Horwitz Trust Research and Scholarship Award, an award given by the trust of Paul Monette, a Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist, for research and scholarship that helps decrease discrimination and violence based on sexual orientation; and the 2005 Evan G. and Helen G Pattishall Outstanding Research Achievement Award, College of Health and Human Development at Penn State University.
