Mary Ondrako, who has more than 15 years of experience in community journalism, has been named editor of The Times Leader Scranton Edition. She assumes her responsibilities immediately.
Ondrako is former special projects editor of The Times Leader. In her new role, she will be responsible for all news content in the Scranton Edition, including assigning and writing stories, editing news copy, designing pages and coordinating all photo coverage.
“We think Mary is the right person to take our Scranton-area coverage to the next level,” said Scott Wasser, The Times Leader’s vice president for news. “In addition to the reporting, editing and design skills she brings to the job, she has a keen sense of community news. I just think she’s going to be able to give area readers the kind of news they want and deserve.”
The Times Leader has been publishing a Scranton Edition since last fall and will soon be unveiling a revamped and vastly upgraded version of that with much more local news than anything area newspaper readers have seen.
“I have big plans to keep the residents of Scranton and Lackawanna County informed about what they and their neighbors are doing, and the events and issues affecting their communities. I am excited about being able to offer a high-quality, alternative news source that will provide a real sense of community to our readers.”
Ondrako graduated from Forest City Regional High School and received her bachelor’s degree in mass communications from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She resides in Forty Fort but is planning a move soon to Clarks Summit.
