Edward J. Hoffman

Edward Joseph Hoffman, 88, of Lewiston, Idaho, died Tuesday, March 31, 2009, at the Idaho State Veterans home in Lewiston.

Edward was born Oct. 22, 1920, in Luzerne County to the late Joseph and Elizabeth Custer Hoffman. He started work at 17 for the Civilian Conservation Corps building roads. He worked for the CCC for three years. In 1940, Edward entered the Army and served in the XIX Corps as a radio operator.

He participated in the Normandy, France, Belgium, and Holland campaigns, which cracked the German “West Wall” or “Siegfried Line” on October 2, 1944. Edward served in active combat in the European Theater until he was honorably discharged on Oct. 18, 1945. In 1946, he graduated from Wyoming Seminary Dean School of Business at Kingston, Pa.

In 1952, Edward married Theodosia Constance Sieczkowski at Plains Township. He was a salesman for Planters Peanuts until his retirement in 1982. Edward also worked part time for several years as a security guard for Bell Research Laboratory in Murray Hill, N.J. He resided in New Providence, N.J., from 1956 through 2008, with his wife, Theodosia, until her death in 2008. They were married 56 years.

On February 9, 2008, he relocated to Lewiston, Idaho, to be near his daughter and son-in-law.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Theodosia Constance Sieczkowski Hoffman.

Edward is survived by his daughter, Yvonne McGehee and husband, Ray, of Moscow, Idaho; sister-in-law Genvieve Sowul, of Lincroft, N.J.; nephew, Bartholomew Sowul, of Monmouth Beach, N.J.; and nephew, Mathew Sowul and his wife, Mary Jo, of Coltis Neck, N.J.

Interment will be next to his wife at St. Mary’s Church of the Maternity in Forty Fort.

Arrangements for interment are with Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home in Wilkes-Barre. No services are scheduled.
