Ohio monk will head U.S. Orthodox Church

PITTSBURGH — An Ohio-born monk has been elected bishop of the Pittsburgh archdiocese for the Orthodox Church in America.

Sixty-six-year-old Bishop-elect Melchisedek is living in a monastery in Greece, but is preparing to move to Pittsburgh. He replaces Archbishop Kyrill, who died in June 2007.

Melchisedek was born Thomas Pleska in Canton, Ohio, and was a broker and real estate appraiser before entering seminary.

He served churches in eastern Pennsylvania and Connecticut before moving to Greece in 1998.
