Bernard Chipego

Bernard Chipego, of Owen Street, Swoyersville, passed away Saturday, May 2, 2009.

Born in Swoyersville, he was a son of the late Anthony and Madeline Chipego. He was a member of Holy Name/St. Mary’s Church, Swoyersville.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army for four years. He was involved with the Normandy landing at Utah Beach and fought in the European Theater. He received the Bronze Medal and the Silver Star.

He was a member of the VFW Post 283, Kingston.

He was preceded in death by brothers Joe and John Chipego, and sisters Bernadine Skerel, Catherine Ricko and Antoinette Silkowski.

Surviving are his wife, the former Violet Rutkowski; a daughter, Barbara Brown, and her husband, Toby, of Lewes, Del.; a son, Bernard Jr., and his wife, Carol, of Dallas; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Daniel Chipego, of Swoyersville; and a sister, Stella Chismer, of Luzerne.

Private funeral will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions can be made to Holy Name/St. Mary’s Church, Shoemaker Street, Swoyersville.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Lehman-Gregory Funeral Home Inc., 281 Chapel St., Swoyersville.
