Joseph F. Karaffa, Jr., 61, of Floral City, Fla., and formerly of Plains Township, died Monday, June 1, 2009, at his home.
Born in Plains, he was a son of the late Joseph and Genevieve (Stachurski) Karaffa.
Joseph was a graduate of Plains Memorial High School, Class of 1965, and Wilkes-Barre Business College. He was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, and was a member of the Army Reserves 109 Watres Armory, Scranton, for 20 years. He was employed as an Electronics Worker at Tobyhanna Army Depot until his retirement.
He was a member of the Polish American Vets, Plains American Legion Joseph E. Conlon Post 558 and the Hudson Servicemen’s Club, all of Plains, Township. He was inducted into the Plains Sports Hall of Fame in 2008 for his achievements in baseball.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Joseph III and Shannon Karaffa, Florida; grandchildren, Carly and Caitlyn Karaffa, all of Citrus Springs, Fla.; sister, Bernadine Burnett, Plains; nephew, Joseph Burnett.
Military services will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. from the Corcoran Funeral Home, 20 South Main Street, Plains, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in SS. Peter & Paul Church, Plains. Interment will be in the Parish Cemetery, Plains. Friends may call Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.
