Charles R. Margelewicz

Charles R. Margelewicz Sr., 87, of West Main Street, Nanticoke, passed away Wednesday afternoon, July 1, 2009, in Hospice Community Care Inpatient Unit, Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre.

He was born in Nanticoke, a son of the late Anthony and Julia (Laskowska) Margelewicz. He was a graduate of Nanticoke High School, Class of 1941, and Williamsport Technical School. He was employed as a cost estimator for Diamond Manufacturing, Wyoming.

Charles was an Air Force veteran of World War II, having served in battles and campaigns in Southern France, Normandy, Northern France, Romo-Arno, and Rhineland. He received the EAME Service medal with five Bronze Stars and the Good Conduct Air Medal. He participated in the D-Day invasion and was very proud of having had the opportunity to serve his country.

Charles married his childhood friend and sweetheart, Betty Thomas, in 1946. He became the proud father of seven children. Charles was an avid gardener and he shared the fruits of his labor with anyone who walked through his door or passed by his home.

He was a clever craftsman who entertained those who knew him with ideas for all sorts of home improvement ideas and gadgets. His pride was his family and his home. He was a great storyteller and was known to be quite the kidder. He had a remarkable sense of humor.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; his parents; sisters, Sophia Shirk and Helen Butchko; and brother, Stanley Mock.

Surviving are his sons, Tony, Nanticoke, and Charles Jr. (Tracy) Margelewicz, Union Township; daughters, Rhea (Larry) Donaldson, Collinsville, Ill.; Ann Marie Bubb, Bethel Park; Donna (Frank) Duda, Wanamie; Shelly (Bill) Jones, Hanover Township, and Joan (Jim) Schonfeld, Sheatown; grandchildren, Christian Donaldson and Molly Hicks, David, Jeffrey, Charles and Eric Conklin, Paul and Daniel Duda, Sarah and Russell Shales, Stephanie Ruckle, Rhea Ann and Charles Margelewicz III., and Benjamin and Julia Schonfeld; he was blessed with five great-grandchildren, with one soon to arrive, Chloe Duda, Sawyer and Margaux Hicks, Emily Duda and Ava Ruckle.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family under the direction of Davis-Dinelli Funeral home, 170 E. Broad St., Nanticoke.

The family asks that memorial contributions be made to St. Jude’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1905 or Hospice Community Care.
