WVC duo settle for 2nd places

WVW’s Bergey is D2 champ, but drops D2-4 3A final. Lynn of Berwick loses D2 2A final.

CLARKS SUMMIT – The District 2 gold medal that Christine Bergey clinched with a semifinal win was already around her neck, but in the immediate aftermath of a hard-fought loss, it was not much help in making her feel any better.

“Not really,” Bergey said. “It doesn’t really help.”

The Wyoming Valley West junior was the last District 2 player standing in the District 2-4 Class 3A Subregional when she reached Friday’s final at Birchwood Racquet Club. After leading late in the first set, she fell short with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 loss to Williamsport’s Raneem Rajjoub, who advances to the state tournament in Hershey.

“She’s a good player,” Rajjoub said. “She puts a lot of spin on the ball and gets to a lot of shots.”

It was Rajjoub, however, who won the most important points. She won the first set on a tiebreaker and broke away from a 3-3 tie in the second set to win the last three games.

“I always felt like we were pretty equal,” Bergey said. “One point could swing it either way.

“She was a little more consistent than I was.”

As the match wore on, Rajjoub also increased her aggressiveness.

“I started playing my game more and hitting out on some balls,” she said. “In the first set, I was trying to play it safe.

“Then, I started taking advantage of some chances and hit some shots down the lines and cross-court.”

Bergey was one of two Wyoming Valley Conference players to finish second in the district singles tournaments. Sara Lynn of Berwick took second in District 2 Class 2A when she lost to Scranton Prep’s Anne Cognetti, 6-2, 6-0, in the final.

Both players started Friday’s action with semifinal wins while Wyoming Seminary’s Caroline Meuser was being eliminated in Class 2A.

Cognetti downed Meuser, 6-1, 6-2, as part of a tournament where she lost just seven games in her last eight sets.

Bergey rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Williamsport’s Taquoia Lee, giving her six straight sets where she lost no more than a game. She clinched the status of District 2 champion when Rajjoub beat Wallenpaupack’s Alyssia Deutsch, 6-2, 6-1.

The strong play by Bergey, who was also a runner-up in Class 2A as a freshman while at Holy Redeemer, continued into the final but was not quite enough against Rajjoub.

Lynn erased a 5-3 deficit in the first set and finished strong to defeat Western Wayne’s Tatiana Samson, 7-5, 6-0, and reach the 2A final for the second consecutive year.

In the final, Lynn started strong, taking a 2-1 lead on Cognetti before the Scranton Prep senior ran off the last 11 games.

“There was not a single point in the match where things changed,” Cognetti said. “I just tried to keep my head and be positive all the way through to the last point.”

District 2 moves to doubles play Oct. 8-9, tentatively set for Kirby Park.

The team championships are scheduled for Oct. 13.
