Censure recommended for captain in video scandal

Letters also recommended for 3 others for raunchy videos shown aboard USS Enterprise.

An admiral is recommending a letter of censure for a former aircraft carrier commander who produced and broadcast raunchy videos to sailors.

Adm. John Harvey on Thursday also recommended censure letters for three of Capt. Owen Honors’ former supervisors aboard the USS Enterprise. The three included two rear admirals and a captain.

The censure letters potentially could lead to the officers having to justify why they should remain in the Navy.

A Navy investigation found at least 25 videos contained inappropriate scenes.

Honors was relieved of command in January shortly before a scheduled deployment to the Middle East after Navy leaders learned about the videos from media reports.

The videos, produced on the ship and broadcast to the crew during deployments between October 2005 and December 2007, included anti-gay slurs, sailors of both genders in shower scenes and salty language. They were broadcast over the ship’s TV system during weekly movie nights.
