It’s time to hit the hardwood in Avoca!
The Avoca Basketball League (ABL) will have registration sessions today as well as January 12 and 16 from 7-8 p.m. at the Avoca Community Center, 800 Main St.
League play begins Saturday, Jan. 22.
Registration is open to boys and girls in kindergarten through sixth grade.
The ABL is sponsored by the Avoca Borough and the Avoca Jolly Boys. It is played in memory of Michael Joyce.

Avoca residents are invited to recycle newspaper and commingled glass, plastic, and metal bottles, cans, and jars every Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the Moosic Recycling Truck at the Avoca Municipal Garage, 1106 Plane St.
Please note all lids should be removed and disposed of in your home trash.
Containers should be rinsed, plastics and metals should be flattened, and glass should not be broken.
Newspaper should not be placed in bags.
All recyclables should be placed in the appropriate compartments of the truck.
The Duryea Wildcats will meet Tuesday, Jan. 11 at 6 p.m. at the Duryea Wildcats field, corner of Kramer and Shaft Streets, Duryea.
Anyone who is interested in a coaching or an advising position should attend this meeting. Please note this will be the final day to apply.

The 2011 Avoca Borough garbage stickers can be purchased from Therese Wrubel at the Avoca Municipal Building, 752 Main St., Tuesdays from 9:30-11:30 a.m. and Fridays from 6-7 p.m. beginning January 18.
The fee schedule for purchasing the window sticker in order to have up to three bags collected weekly is as follows: $155 if purchased by February 21; $160 if purchased between February 22 and March 22; $170 if purchased between March 23 and April 23; $180 if purchased between April 24 and May 24; and $190 if purchased between May 25 and June 25.
Please note delinquent accounts will be referred to district court after June 25, and all Avoca home owners and renters are obligated to purchase a garbage sticker.
Residents who are unable to stop by the municipal building to purchase a garbage sticker, can mail a check made payable to Avoca Borough and a self-addressed stamped envelope to Avoca Borough c/o Therese Wrubel, 129 Factory St., Avoca, PA 18641.

The members of St. Mary’s/SS. Peter and Paul’s Churches’ youth group are collecting children’s hats, scarves, and gloves throughout January. Items can be placed in the vestibule of each church.
Proceeds will benefit the Greater Pittston Kids Closet, which is located in the former Seton Catholic High School.
