WA Catholic students complete chapter on earthquakes

The sixth grade Earth Science class of Wyoming Area Catholic School recently completed a chapter on Earthquakes. As part of their study they were challenged to design a seismograph. The problem presented to 6th grade was "Can you design a seismograph that can record the movements of simulated earthquakes?" Their sesimograph had to do the following:

1. Record vibrations continuously for 30 seconds.

2. Produce a seismograph that can distinguish between gentle and strong earthquakes.

3. Record seismic readings consistently from trial to trial. Students worked in groups. As a groupd they had to complete the following

skill objectives:

1. Design an experiment.

2. Evaluate their results.

3. Troubleshoot problems that occur during the design and build stages.

Pictures are the students with their completed and workable seismographs.
