At Napoli’s Pizza it’s a Super split decision

Antonio Costagliole: ‘If the Steelers win I’ll have to get a new wife.’

Nadia Costagliole, 5, at left, and her sister Sofia, 9, are at odds over today’s Super Bowl. Nadia is a Steelers fan like her mother Tiffany. Sofia follows her Dad, Antonio, as a Green Bay Packers fan. The family owns and operates Napoli’s Pizza on Main Street.

Tiffany Costagliole, 33, has been a Steelers fans since she was five or six and learned a Steelers cheer as a junior football cheerleader. Her husband Antonio, 36, has been a Green Bay fan since 1995 when he won $100 betting on the Packers at a time when, as an immigrant from Italy, he knew next to nothing about American football.

In accented English Antonio explained he learned about football from a friend and neighbor in the Nazareth area where he lived before he and Tiffany moved to Pittston and opened Napoli’s Pizza on South Main Street.

“I came from soccer. He teach me a little bit what football was. I said I want the people with the green shirts and the yellow helmets. I won a hundred dollars and that was the best thing I ever did. Then I got married,” he said laughing.

Tiffany said her favorite players were Jerome Bettis, Kordell Stewart and Joe Green, “Though he was before my time.”

Antonio’s favorites were Brett Favre and Reggie White. When Antonio was introduced to football as a new immigrant he thought it was all about size and brute force and he couldn’t imagine anyone being any bigger and stronger than White.

These days he’s fully versed in helmets and pads football. He predicts Green Bay will win 27-24. Recalling the December 20 game when the Steelers beat the Packers 37-36 on a last second touchdown pass – which Antonio called “An Ava Maria” – he expects a very close game.

He expects the Packers to win 27-24 on an Ava Maria of their own from Aaron Rodgers to Jennings, a scene he has depicted on top of a display case in the restaurant with figures of the players. “The Packers gotta win,” Antonio said, “if the Steelers win I’ll have to get a new wife.”

Tiffany rolled her eyes at that and predicted Pittsburgh to win 31-27, saying, “Bringing home number seven.”

Antonio and Tiffany have three young daughters. “I brainwashed two of them,” Antonio said laughing. “I got two out of three,” referring to Sofia, 9, and Maia, 4, who are Green Bay fans. Nadia, 5, went with Mom and the Steelers.

Asked for a prediction Sofia said, “Steelers zero, Green Bay 100.” She said her team will win, “because Rodgers is wearing his favorite shoes.”

Nadia one-upped her sister saying the Steelers will win 101-0.

Antonio and Tiffany will be working during the Super Bowl at Napoli’s making specials for partiers, like two large 16-inch pizzas with two toppings each and 50 wings for $40.99.

As they work they’ll follow the game today on TVs in the restaurant and the kitchen.
