When District 2 closed it Class 3A basketball tournament, it – along with the new Wyoming Valley Conference “Power Rating System” – closed the door on postseason basketball in Greater Pittston.
Playing an unbalanced schedule both Pittston Area and Wyoming Area will not reach the postseason in 2011 after subpar seasons on both sides of the river for both the boys’ and girls’ teams.
The D2 Class 3A tournament will consist of five teams from the WVC and three from the Lackawanna League this year. The district left it up to the separate leagues to come up with their own ways to determine who would qualify.
The LL simply took the top teams in Division I and II by their records.
The WVC assigned a point system and power rating to determine their five seeds among the 10 boys’ teams and nine girls’ teams in Division I and II.
As it stands right now, the PA and WA boys are seventh and eighth in the power ratings with an opportunity to move no higher than sixth, and the PA and WA girls are currently seventh and eighth with the opportunity to move no higher than sixth for the Lady Patriots and seventh for the Lady Warriors.
On the boys’ side, Holy Redeemer, Tunkhannock, and Crestwood look to be in with Dallas, Nanticoke and Coughlin battling for the final two sports. West Scranton, Valley View and North Pocono are the LL teams with Abington Heights currently fourth.
On the girls’ side, Redeemer, Dallas, Berwick, Crestwood and Nanticoke all seem to be in with the Lady Comets and Trojanettes battling for position. West Scranton, Scranton Prep and Valley View are currently the three LL teams.
In the small school division - which is still an open tourney - the four-time defending champion Old Forge boys have the top-seed locked up with MMI (3-8), Susquehanna (3-10), Forest City (2-11) and St. Mike’s (0-11) rounding out the field.
On the girls’ side, the three-time defending champion Blue Devils will be the No. 2 seed behind Forest City (12-1). Northwest (3-10), Blue Ridge (2-11), MMI (0-13) and Susquehanna (0-13) make up the rest of the field.
