Pittston Area took the field on Tuesday hoping to celebrate with their senior captains Sara Kielbasa and Kaylene Sutkowski with a victory. However, Wyoming Seminary was able to upset the Lady Patriots 2-1 in a Division 2A game at the Bucky Harris Sports Complex in Hughestown on Senior Parents Day.

The scoring opportunities came quick and often for the Lady Patriots as they attacked the goal with 17 shots. But Pittston Area could not manage to beat the keeper on several good looks.

“We just could not find the back of the net,” said Coach Nicole Tieso. “We need to make the most of all of our opportunities and unfortunately today we were not able to.”

It looked as if PA was going to get on the board early when Wyoming Seminary was whistled for a handball in the penalty box, leading to a penalty kick. Liz Mikitish stepped up but sailed the ball over the net in what was a sign of things to come for the Lady Patriots.

Though PA was attacking the Lady Blue Knights defense constantly, Sem was the first one to get on the board just nine minutes into the game. Down by one, the Lady Patriots poured on the pressure.

The ever-dangerous Sara Ruby broke through the defense and was one-on-one with the goalie, but the keeper was able to make a sliding save to prevent the goal.

Less than one minute later, Mikitish ripped a shot off a free kick but it was deflected away by the wall set up in front of the goal. Finally, with less than 14 minutes left in the half, Ruby took the ball in the box and played it past the keeper to Danielle Fereck, who chipped it into the net to tie the game at 1-1

The second half looked just like the first as the Lady Patriots would create numerous good chances only to have them denied by the Sem keeper.

Just as the game would appear to be heading to overtime, Wyoming Seminary was able to break the tie and steal a 2-1 victory.

“We will work on finishing,” said Tieso. “All in all the girls played a nice game. I’m proud of their effort.”

PA held a 21-8 shot advantage and a 17-6 advantage in shots on goal.

Jordan Cumbo made five saves in net for Pittston Area.

PA 2, Honesdale 4

Pittston Area’s playoff hopes were dashed in a 4-2 loss to Honesdale on Friday afternoon in Wayne County. The Lady Patriots now need North Pocono to lose to Meyers (8-2-1) and MMI Prep (0-11) to qualify for the District 2 Tournament.

Liz Mikitish and Sara Ruby scored goals for PA, and Danielle Fereck was credited with an assist.

Jordan Cumbo stopped five shots in goal for the Lady Patriots.

WA 0, Tunkhannock 2

Wyoming Area was held scoreless in a 2-0 loss to Tunkhannock on Tuesday afternoon in a Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2B match at the Tenth Street Soccer Field in Wyoming.

The Lady Warriors out shot the Lady Tigers, 26-12, but could not find the back of the net against Tunkhannock keeper Spencer Corby.

Megan Yurek and Caitlin Vitale combined for 12 saves in net for Wyoming Area.

Dispatch Staff Writer Rick Notari contributed to this report.
