Flynn, Giambra win District 2 gold

Patriots, Warriors total 28 medals

Wyoming Area’s Matt Flynn and Pittston Area’s Olivia Giambra each won gold medals at the District 2 Junior High Track & Field Championships which were held May 14 at Scranton Memorial Stadium.

The duo were part of a group of Patriots and Warriors that combined to collect 28 medals, including 15 in the top three spots as the Pittston Area girls finished second overall and the Wyoming Area boys placed fourth overall.

Flynn, a freshman, captured gold in the Pole Vault with a vault of 10-6. He bested Valley View’s Ryan Wilkes, Tunkhannock’s Stefan Sehne, and Pittston Area’s Zach Erfman by six inches for the win. Erfman earned a fourth-place finish with his vault of 10-0.

Giambra, an eighth-grader, earned her gold medal in the Long Jump with a leap of 15-5. She won the tiebreaker with Wyoming Area’s Haley Stackhouse who posted the same distance of 15-5. Stackhouse earned the only silver medal for the Lady Warriors. Giambra also earned a bronze medal in the Triple Jump with a jump of 32-3.5.

On the boys’ side WA’s Isaih Peoples earned the only individual silver medal for the Greater Pittston group with a second place finish in the 100m Dash. His time of 12.13 was just .23 behind winner Pat Monahan (11.9) of North Pocono. Peoples also finished fourth in the 200m Dash.

Pittston Area’s Austin Naples earned a bronze medal in the 200m Dash with a time of 24.90 and finished fifth in the 100m Dash.

Chuck Poli won a bronze medal for the Patriots in the Shot Put with a throw of 42-10. Wyoming Area’s Jeff Skursky finished fourth with throw of 41-1. Skursky however won bronze in the Javelin with a throw of 143-9.

Wyoming Area’s Tim Russell earned a bronze medal in the Long Jump with a leap of 18-8.25, and teammate Matt Hine finished fifth with a jump of 18-3.25. Hine also earned a fourth place medal in the Triple Jump for the Warriors with a leap of 36-11.25.

The Pittston Area 4 x 100m Relay team of Austin Naples, Kyle Gattuso, Danny Brady and Zach Erfman won a silver medal with a time of 47.76 finishing just behind the Holy Redeemer team who posted a time of 47.68. The WA team of Jordan Pardini, Isaih Peoples, Jeff Skursky and Ryan Murphy placed sixth with a time of 48.88.

On the girls’ side, Pittston Area’s Allison Parrent won silver in the Javelin with a throw of 94-8, and Pittston Area’s Elizabeth Waleski won silver in the 300m Hurdles with a time of 50.86. Waleski also finished fifth for the Lady Patriots in the 100m Hurdles.

Rhianon Avvisato earned bronze for Pittston Area in the 100m Hurdles with a time of 17.78.

Celes Owens also won a bronze for the Lady Patriots with a leap of 4-8 in the High Jump.

Wyoming Area’s Jillian Spak earned a fourth place finish in the 100m Dash and a fifth place finish in the 300m Hurdles.

Tara Johnson finished fourth for the Lady Patriots in the 3200m Distance Run, and Courtney Gyles placed sixth in the Triple Jump for PA.

The Pittston Area 4 x 400m Relay team of Elizabeth Scialpi, Olivia Giambra, Elizabeth Waleski and Rebecca Weinstock – all eighth graders – finished fourth with a time of 4:30.47.

The Lady Patriots 4 x 100m Relay team of Scialpi, Giambra, Gyles and Nicole Mayerski placed sixth with a time of 55.46
