Pittston Area’s Dave McLean wasn’t a happy camper when the District 2 Class 3A Boys’ Track & Field Championships were postponed for the third time last Thursday. But that didn’t slow down the Patriots’ top distance runner when the time to race came on Saturday.

McLean posted a season-best time of 4:29.42 to win district gold in the 1600m Run at Scranton Memorial Stadium. The PA senior won the event by more than six seconds over Valley View’s Jordan Siddons. McLean’s time was almost seven seconds better than his seed time of 4:37.00.

“Mostly, it’s been a tough week,” McLean told the Times Leader. “I wasn’t happy Thursday when they (postponed it). It was not good.”

But McLean was at his best on Saturday and used a different approach in running his best race of the season.

“Usually I run out front,” said McLean. “This time, I held back more and in the last lap, I kicked.”

McLean’s victory came just a year after he finished 15th in the event as a junior.

First-time varsity hurdler Ron D’Eliseo also put some hardware in the Pittston Area trophy case by earning silver and bronze medals in the 300m and 110m Hurdle events.

D’Eliseo finished second in the 300m Hurdles behind Valley View’s Brandon Jackson. He posted a time of 40.86 with Jackson running a 40.13.

The PA sophomore then earned bronze in the 110m Hurdles with a time of 16.16. Jimmy Hischar of Hazleton won the event with a time of 15.65, and Matt Moorhead finished of Coughlin second with a time of 15.92.

Pittston Area’s Cody Rydzy finished eighth in the 110m Hurdles, and 14th in the 300m Hurdles. Rydzy ran a season best time of 43.74 in the 300m Hurdles. His finish in the 110m Hurdles improved on his 15th-place finish last season as a junior.

But Rydzy didn’t come away disappointed at the championships. The senior earned a bronze medal in the Long Jump with a leap of 20-06.00 which bested his seed time by two inches. Lionel Wilson on Honesdale won the Long Jump with a leap of 22-08.25. Nick Auriemma of Tunkhannock won silver with a jump of 20-09.

John Poli of Pittston Area added to the Patriots medal count with a fifth-place finish in the Shot Put. Poli heaved the shot 46-06.00. Pete Calderone of North Pocono won the event with a throw of 50.02.50. Poli finished 10th as a junior.

Matt Erfman also claimed a fifth-place finish for the Patriots in the Pole Vault. Erfman vaulted a season-best 11-09. Sean Burns of Delaware Valley won the event with a vault of 13-09. Wyoming Area’s Eric Eramo finished 11th with a vault of 11-09.

Eramo earned the highest finish for the Warriors with an eighth-place finish in the High Jump. Eramo posted a jump of 5-07 in the event that was won by Coughlin’s Connor Flaherty at 6-03.
