The 28th annual Pittston Tomato Festival opens Thursday, August 18, and runs through Sunday, August 21, on the festival grounds off South Main Street in Pittston. Upwards of 50,000 people are expected to attend the four-day event. The festival opens at 5 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and at 11 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
There will be live entertainment each night along with a gala parade, 5K run and the unusual and popular tomato fights on Saturday. The 2011 Pittston Tomato Festival Queen will be crowned Saturday.
Sauce Wars, a booth at which festival-goers can taste and then vote for their favorite marinara sauce, will run throughout the festival.
As usual, the Sunday Dispatch will offer a variety of giveaway items at its booth including 2011 Pittston Tomato Festival T-shirts and the latest edition of the Dispatch dye-cast toy vehicle. Clip the “Dispatch Dollar” on this page for a free spin on the wheel at the Dispatch booth. Visitors to the booth can also spin the wheel for a one dollar donation to the Care and Concern Health Clinic and Greater Pittston Food Pantry.
