A long time ago in a community not so far away, people grew tomatoes in their backyard gardens. The rich, acidic soil made the quality of the tomatoes the talk of the town. The fruits of their labor were used to prepare many homemade dishes, especially pasta with tomato sauce. This tradition continues today and has been included in many local restaurants that pride themselves on the quality of their special sauce recipe.
“Sauce Wars” at the Pittston Tomato Festival involves local restaurants competing for the bragging rights proclaiming their sauce superiority. For a $1 donation, Festival goers are encouraged to taste and vote for their favorite sauce. The winner will be announced on Sunday evening at 6 p.m. on the Festival grounds. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Greater Pittston YMCA.
